Kuki-Zo Community Mourns Farmer Killed in Manipur Attack

Imphal: Thousands of mourners crowded the Kangpokpi Community Hall on July 12. They came to honor Haolal Singsit. The 53-year-old farmer died July 11 after being shot in his field at Govajang village. His wife was working with him but escaped the gunfire. Witnesses blame suspected NSCN-IM and ZUF-Kamson militants for the ambush.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) organized the tribute. CoTU spokesperson Ng. Lun Kipgen blasted the failure of current security measures. He noted the shooting happened despite recent military combing operations. Kipgen said the attack serves as "evidence of continued attacks on innocent Kuki-Zo civilians."

CoTU is now demanding the Indian and Manipur governments hunt down the armed groups responsible. They want Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to secure the hill districts. Singsit’s body was moved to his home village for burial after a post-mortem at the district hospital. Community leaders warn that security gaps continue to put civilians in the line of fire.
