Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) and several Kuki civil society organisations have launched an indefinite shutdown across National Highway 2 and National Highway 37. The protest, which began at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, follows mounting anger over what local groups describe as partial and selective security operations in the Leimakhong-Kangchup region of Kangpokpi.

Reports of deserted roads and shuttered businesses emerged across Kangpokpi, Saparmeina, and Gamgiphai as volunteers enforced the bandh. While the strike halted most vehicular movement, the organisers have exempted essential services, including medical emergencies, ambulance transport, and humanitarian relief efforts.

Kuki groups allege that security forces have disproportionately targeted their communities and local village volunteers, failing to provide the neutral protection necessary to maintain order. Janghaolun Haokip, a spokesperson for the Kuki CSOs in Kangpokpi, stated that the highway closure was a direct response to, "selective security operations conducted by central security forces."

The organisations have linked the current unrest to the recent deaths of three Christian pastors and twelve Kuki villagers, citing these incidents as the primary source of grief and fear among the Kuki-Zo community. They have also pointed to recurring reports of village attacks, property destruction, and widespread civilian displacement.

Calling the security situation "rapidly deteriorating," CoTU has formally petitioned the Ministry of Home Affairs to intervene. The committee is demanding an independent investigation into recent killings and a move toward impartial security protocols. They warn that any perceived bias from the government risks further inflaming tensions and undermining public trust in state institutions.
