Konyak Union demands border clarity before Assam-Nagaland oil drilling

Kohima: The Konyak Union is blocking the path to oil exploration. Leaders want clear border definitions before the government acts on a June 11, 2026, Memorandum of Understanding signed in New Delhi. The Union Home Minister attended that signing. Now, the state faces a hard stop.

Union President K Yamao Konyak and General Secretary Wango Konyak demand resolution in the Tizit-Naginimora belt. They also pointed to the boundary between Longwa in Mon district and Pongchao in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district. The stakes are high. The group aims to ensure no future conflict arises from the project.

Landowners must have a say. The Union insists the state must respect the views and wishes of those who own the soil. As the leaders stated, “It is necessary that the concerns, rights and consent of the landowners are taken into account to ensure a fair, transparent and acceptable outcome for all stakeholders.”

Digital maps are causing real-world headaches. The Union claims Google Maps inaccurately draws boundaries against historical ancestral lines between the Konyaks and the Ahoms of Assam. They alerted the Chief Minister on September 3, 2024, but received no response. These inaccuracies now threaten to spark fights between Nagaland and Assam, and between Mon district villages and Wancho areas in Arunachal Pradesh.

The group also backs the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation. That body called for clarity on the Disputed Area Belt on July 8, 2026. Security remains a top priority. The Union reminded the state of a July 12, 2025, request for better defenses. They want police check gates at Longwa, Chenmoho, Wangti, and Monyaksho. They also seek new posts at Namthai, Hota Hoti, plus the Wakching Police Station and Laukun Police Outpost.
