Kohima: The Konyak Union and the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) are joining forces. They want to settle border disputes and bilateral friction through direct talks. No third parties will be invited to the table. The groups met on August 22 in Sivasagar, Assam, to cement their historical ties.
They formed a new Peace Committee to kill misunderstandings before they start. Representatives from the Konyak Union, the Konyak Students Union, and the Konyak Mother Association met with various ATASU district committees and women’s councils to hammer out the deal. Kaibo Konyak, press and media secretary for the Konyak Union, stated, “The house unanimously resolved that any matter relating to border issues or other concerns between the two communities shall be addressed through mutual dialogue between the Tai Ahom and Konyak Union, in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, without involving any third-party organization.”
The meeting also addressed the recent run of destruction from floods and landslides. Both Mon District in Nagaland and parts of Assam have taken a beating from nature. The groups demanded that the Nagaland and Assam state governments conduct scientific and technical assessments of these calamities. They argue that local officials must use long-term environmental planning to stop the next disaster. The organizations remain committed to building brotherhood and sustainable development across the region.
