Kohima: Kohima officials met September 24 to streamline disability services. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem led the District Level Committee session at his office. They confirmed that the Unique Disability ID card is now mandatory for accessing Central Government schemes. Applicants must provide an Aadhaar card and bank account details. Medical authorities must certify at least 40 percent disability to qualify for the ID.
The committee tackled the hurdle of getting medical exams for people with severe intellectual disabilities. They proposed using video conferences for these assessments. Technical teams will now visit homes to help residents who cannot reach banks or Aadhaar centers. Buchem noted that public awareness regarding accessibility remains low. He pointed to the lift at the DC office as a standard for future work. "Many people remain unaware of accessibility requirements," Buchem said.
The group explored 21 disability categories and pushed for more than just ramps. They want sign-language interpreters at public events and church programs. The committee also plans to meet with religious leaders to discuss modifying places of worship. Officials are looking at NST and city bus services to ensure they provide designated seats and concessions. They also flagged the need to stop the misuse of disability certificates in employment. The District Legal Services Authority will help applicants gather necessary paperwork. Buchem promised full administrative support to ensure disabled citizens receive their entitlements.
