Kohima District Reaffirms Strict Ban on Single-Use Plastics

Kohima: Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem has issued a formal notification reiterating a total ban on single-use plastics across all villages in Kohima district. This directive follows mandates from the state Home Department, recent Supreme Court orders, and national Plastic Waste Management rules to curb environmental pollution.

The order covers a wide range of prohibited items including plastic carry bags, cutlery like straws and spoons, and Styrofoam materials. It also bans specific items such as ear buds with plastic sticks, balloon sticks, plastic flags, and various thermocol decorations. Additionally, the use of plastic trays, wrapping films for sweet boxes, and plastic stirrers is now strictly forbidden.

Government departments and local institutions must also follow the ban on flex banners and PVC signage, a policy first introduced in 2020. Furthermore, the district has prohibited the use of packaged drinking water bottles smaller than 20 liters during meetings, official functions, or for general consumption. Residents and officials are expected to ensure full compliance with these environmental regulations immediately.
