Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) announced that individuals who fail to follow the Khasi Lineage Act face the loss of their Khasi community status. During the opening of the council's summer session, Executive Member for Legal Affairs Deity H. Majaw clarified the enforcement of the 1997 Act and the 2007 Social Custom of Lineage Act.

The discussion followed inquiries from NPP MDC Grace Kharpuri and Opposition Leader Titosstarwell Chyne. Kharpuri questioned the consequences for those who do not adopt their mother's surname, while Chyne sought confirmation on how the current laws reinforce traditional naming customs. Majaw explained that Section 10 of the legislation outlines clear penalties for non-compliance.

Majaw emphasized the gravity of these regulations during her address to the House. "Those who violate the Act will be deprived of their Khasi community status. Those who renounce their Khasi community identity will be removed from Khasi status," she stated. The council reaffirmed that the legislation is designed to strengthen the tradition of inheriting the mother's surname, though children born to two Khasi parents will retain their status.
