Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has officially rejected a state government proposal aimed at resolving recurring salary delays for its employees. The government had suggested appointing a senior IAS or MCS officer as Principal Secretary to monitor the Council's financial management and ensure timely wage payments.
Seiborlang Warbah, the Executive Member in charge of Finance, announced the decision during the opening of the Council's summer session. He explained that the state government initiated the proposal due to persistent concerns regarding the financial health of the ADCs and the impact of their limited revenue base on staff compensation. Despite these challenges, Warbah argued that the Council’s current situation does not necessitate such intervention.
Addressing the House, Warbah stated, "We do not deny that the Council faces financial challenges. However, we have not yet reached a stage where the situation can be described as acute financial distress." The Executive Committee determined that the proposal requires deeper examination to protect the Council's long-term administrative independence. Instead of accepting the state’s oversight mechanism, the Council intends to pursue its own strategies to stabilize its finances while maintaining full control over its operations.
