Kanto Sabal residents demand safe school access after Kuki rally blockade

Imphal: Kanto Sabal residents took to the streets after a Kuki rally blocked school children near the Ex-Servicemen Colony. Roughly 30 students heading to Kendriya Vidyalaya in Leimakhong were stopped at 7:30 am. Protesters told the kids they could not pass. The rally aimed to challenge an economic blockade by Naga groups over the May 13 abduction of six civilians.

Locals want the kids safe. The Village Development Committee and the Kanto Sabal Women Welfare Organisation marched to demand uninterrupted travel for students. They handed a memorandum to the GOC of the 57 Mountain Division at Leimakhong. The document explicitly asks the military to stop Kuki protesters from advancing past Disha Boys.

The memorandum stated that the military must prevent what they described as “area domination” in these localities in order to maintain peace and normalcy. Organizers also requested that Premnagar and Ex-Servicemen Colony become neutral zones. They suggested a permanent military barrier to monitor the area. Additionally, they want more Naga and Meitei teachers assigned to the school to keep classes running during the unrest.
