Imphal: A 63-year-old farmer received urgent medical intervention from the Indian Army after sustaining a suspected cobra bite in Bishnupur on Tuesday. Leisangtham Bimeshwar was working in his fields at approximately 4:30 PM when the snake struck his right hand. He reported that the black snake raised its hood before attacking, leaving a visible fang mark at the base of his thumb.
Despite the bite, Bimeshwar continued working before arriving at the Army camp's Medical Aid Post three hours later. He was suffering from pain and progressive swelling in his right hand and forearm. Medical staff immediately provided first aid, including wound cleaning, limb splinting, oxygen support, and intravenous fluids.
The Regimental Medical Officer coordinated with the District Hospital in Bishnupur to ensure the patient received higher-level care. The Army team facilitated his evacuation at 8:45 PM, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit by 9:10 PM. Military officials noted the incident involved a snake that "raised its hood before striking," confirming the suspicion of a venomous encounter. Bimeshwar remains in the hospital under specialist observation.
