Imphal: The New Integrated Terminal Building at Imphal International Airport has reached the halfway point of construction. This project aims to replace an outdated facility built 25 years ago that currently struggles to handle a significant surge in air traffic.
Airport Director Chipemmi Keishing reported that while the team is working to meet the original schedule, progress faces hurdles from frequent bandhs and economic blockades linked to the ongoing conflict in Manipur. Keishing noted that consistent logistics and transportation support are critical, stating, "The project has achieved nearly 50 per cent physical completion and efforts are being made to ensure completion within the stipulated timeline."
The new 22,000 square metre facility is designed to reflect local cultural heritage while meeting GRIHA 5-star green building standards. Features include four aerobridges, separate zones for domestic and international passengers, and a large parking area for 1,000 cars and 15 buses.
Operations at the airport have expanded rapidly over the last 12 years. Daily flight movements have grown from eight in 2014 to over 50 today, with daily passenger numbers reaching approximately 6,000. While the Union Cabinet approved renaming the facility to Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in 2019, the airport is still awaiting final clearance from the relevant ministry.
Looking ahead, the airport plans to observe Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15, 2026. This national initiative will include cultural events and special passenger welcomes to promote a more efficient and friendly travel experience.
