Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) slammed the Meghalaya government and the Defence Estate Officer for failing to clear illegal settlers from the Lum Survey area. The group claims this neglect turned the site into a breeding ground for drug trafficking and criminal operations. Officials blame pending court cases for their inaction. The HYC rejected this excuse.
The organization argues the legal dispute only involves three individuals on a small plot of land. They insist the rest of the area is wide open for eviction. The HYC said: “The continued silence and negligence of the state government and the office of the Defence Estate Officer have effectively handed over public land to illegal occupants and allowed criminal networks to flourish.”
Authorities remain silent. They have not responded to the group's demands. The HYC warned that if the state refuses to act, the group will launch its own campaign. They intend to hold officials accountable for the rising insecurity in Shillong. Residents are tired of the excuses. The Council wants immediate clearing of all land not currently tied up in court.
