Health Workers in Kohima Adopt AI Tools to Screen for Oral Cancer

Kohima: Health workers in Kohima completed two days of training on AI-based oral cancer screening. The sessions took place on September 29 and 30. The Dr K&T Keditsu Foundation organized the event alongside the NOHP Cell, the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, and CMO Kohima District. The TANUH Foundation and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru provided support.

Seventy people attended the first day at Putuonuo Hospital. This group included 50 government staff nurses, GNMs, ANMs, and CHOs, plus 20 foundation workers. Experts from TANUH led the sessions. The team included Dr Lakshmi Krishnan, Dr Vaijesh Menkudale, Leena Chaven, Dr Bhargavi Paul Majumder, Dr Aabha Singh, Dr Savitesh Kushwaha, and Dr Keduovinuo Keditsu Chielie. They taught participants how to identify abnormal lesions and use the Aarogya Aarohan app. Hands-on practice followed the theory. These tools help workers spot cancer earlier. The program aims to boost community outreach under the National Programme on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Disease.

Speakers highlighted the shift toward using technology in areas with limited resources. Dr Neiphrezo Sorünuo noted the importance of this change, stating that these initiatives represent a "paradigm shift in the delivery of quality healthcare in resource-constrained regions such as Nagaland, with the support of technology and robust public-private partnerships."

On September 30, the experts visited 12 health centers across Kohima Sadar, Sechu-Zubza, Jakhama-Kezocha, and Chiephobozou-Botsa. They deployed 30 AI-enabled mobile phones. Government centers received 20 units, while foundation workers received 10. The Nagaland Nursing Council awarded three credit hours to participants for completing the training.
