Guwahati: The Inland Water Transport Department shut down all ferry services in Guwahati on Wednesday, June 24. Heavy monsoon rains pushed the Brahmaputra River to dangerous levels. Rapidly increasing currents made travel unsafe for passengers. Officials pulled the plug on these routes to prevent accidents.
Operations to the Umananda Temple islet remain halted. This tourist spot sits in the middle of the river and relies entirely on boats. Routes connecting the North and South banks are also out of commission. Thousands of daily commuters must now find other ways to get across.
Authorities blame the surge on upstream discharge and relentless storms. Officials stated that the suspension will remain in force until further notice and services will resume only after the river water level recedes below the danger mark and navigation conditions are assessed as safe for public movement. The IWT Department is monitoring the situation and will announce when it is safe to restart travel.
