Guwahati: Guwahati traffic police will shutter the old Saraighat Bridge starting July 13, 2026. The Northeast Frontier Railway plans a two-month restoration project to fix the structure over the Brahmaputra. The crossing stays closed to all vehicles from 5 am on opening day.

Traffic will move to the new Saraighat Bridge, which shifts to two-way flow for the duration of the repairs. Heavy trucks, excluding buses, must steer clear of the city. These vehicles will reroute via Baihata Chariali and Kaliabor Tiniali. Officials also blocked commercial goods vehicles from using the new bridge between 6 am and 10 pm.

Light vehicles moving from Lower Assam toward Upper Assam through Guwahati also face mandatory diversion. Commuters headed to the airport should expect delays. Police advised travelers to leave early, stating, "The traffic police have advised commuters from Lower Assam to Upper Assam to consider using the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu as an alternative route and urged those travelling to the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to start their journey well in advance in anticipation of congestion."

Authorities banned parking between Jalukbari and the bridge. Emergency vehicles and buses get priority access to the new span. These rules hold until July 31, 2026, pending a formal review. Drivers must obey lane markers and follow instructions from officers on the ground.
