Guwahati: Guwahati Police opened a case after a video surfaced online showing a man kicking chicks onto railway tracks. The footage shows birds scattered across a train floor, many injured or unresponsive with signs of broken bones. The animals were packed without enclosures, leading to high stress. PETA India filed the formal complaint alongside local activist Aditi Bakshi.
Officers registered an FIR under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. They also cited Sections 11(1)(a), 11(1)(d), 11(1)(e), 11(1)(k), and 38(3) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. It is a serious crime.
Sinchana Subramanyan, a senior officer at PETA, slammed the act. She stated, "Chicks feel pain, stress and fear, and kicking, injuring, and throwing these fragile birds onto railway tracks is outrageous cruelty." Subramanyan also praised Senior Superintendent of Railway Police Pranjit Borah for fast-tracking the investigation.
These birds likely came from the meat or egg industries. Male chicks in the egg business are often discarded because they cannot produce eggs. PETA reports these unwanted birds frequently end up suffocated, drowned, or ground up. The organization warns that chicks are also sold as cheap toys, often dying from toxic exposure or rough handling.
