Guwahati: Authorities in Guwahati arrested Akash Prasad on Wednesday after the death of his 29-year-old girlfriend, Susmita Basumatary, at her rented home in the Hatigaon area. Basumatary, who hailed from the Udalguri district, was discovered following reports of a late-night dispute between the couple.

Family members claim the relationship had become strained due to allegations that Prasad was involved with another woman. They suggest these personal tensions led the victim to take extreme measures. According to relatives, the couple hosted a gathering on Tuesday evening, which escalated into a heated argument regarding Prasad’s alleged infidelity.

While the victim was in contact with family until 1 am, she became unreachable by Wednesday morning. Police investigators currently suspect that the woman died by suicide after locking herself in her room. Hatigaon Police detained Prasad for questioning before formally placing him under arrest.

The family has formally accused Prasad of abetment to suicide. Reflecting on the tragic turn of events, one family member stated, "Susmita was driven to take the extreme step due to tensions in the relationship." The victim’s body has been transferred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital morgue as officials continue their investigation into the case.
