Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation officials are cracking down on parking and market fee collectors. The move follows persistent complaints that staff were shaking down citizens for extra cash. Mayor Mrigen Sarania met with leaseholders at the Uzan Bazar headquarters on Friday to enforce the new rules.

Collectors must now wear designated uniforms while working. They must also carry official identity cards at all times. This prevents random people from posing as city workers to pocket illicit fees. GMC officials insist these changes will clear up confusion and protect local traders.

The corporation also banned the use of makeshift receipt books. All collectors must issue official, verified receipts for every transaction. Mayor Sarania believes these mandates will stop the bleeding of public funds. "As these measures are implemented, complaints regarding excess fee collection are expected to decline significantly. This will help establish a more transparent and orderly system while creating a better environment for both businesses and consumers," he said.

City officials plan to monitor the collectors closely. Any leaseholder who ignores these directives faces strict enforcement. The goal is to keep costs locked at approved rates for every resident in Guwahati.
