Kohima: The central government is set to launch the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission, known as VB-G RAM G, on July 1. This new initiative will replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. Twenty-five states have already allocated their share of funds for the program, signaling readiness for the nationwide rollout.
The scheme guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household each financial year for those willing to perform unskilled manual work. This marks an increase from the 100-day entitlement provided under the previous system. Workers will receive new smart job cards equipped with face recognition technology, a measure designed to increase accountability and prevent misuse of funds.
Officials described the program as a major upgrade that addresses structural weaknesses in the older model. By shifting to a centrally sponsored framework, the government aims to better reflect the local nature of rural asset creation. The total annual funding requirement is estimated at 1,51,282 crore rupees, with the center providing 95,692.31 crore rupees.
The program follows a cost-sharing model based on state capacity. Most states will operate on a 60:40 ratio, while northeastern and Himalayan states receive 90:10 support. Union territories without legislatures will be fully funded by the center. Officials confirmed that this financial transition is designed to provide predictable budgeting without placing an undue burden on state governments.
