Guwahati: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have launched Mission Senehjori. This cluster-based initiative aims to elevate India’s golden Muga silk into a globally competitive luxury textile. The program is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the Assam government, the Central Silk Board, and the Ministry of Textiles.

While Assam produces 90 percent of the world's Muga silk, the sector currently remains under-monetized with many families earning modest annual incomes. Mission Senehjori intends to fix this by modernizing the entire value chain. The project covers key districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli, and Sualkuchi. Planned improvements include better host-plant cultivation, advanced reeling infrastructure, and the creation of Common Facility Centres.

The government plans to invest between 396 and 411 crore rupees over three years to implement these changes. By establishing the Senehjori brand, the mission will focus on GI authentication, digital traceability, and expanded export opportunities. Scindia described Muga silk as a vital cultural asset and pledged to connect the state's traditional weavers with global luxury markets. Beyond textiles, the mission aims to promote Assam as a prominent destination for silk-based cultural tourism.
