Guwahati: Floodwaters in Assam claimed 21 more lives in 24 hours. The total death toll now sits at 31. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported the grim surge on Tuesday night. Sivasagar suffered the most with 13 deaths, followed by five in Charaideo, two in Golaghat, and one in Jorhat. Over 5.64 lakh people across 16 districts are now struggling against the deluge.
The government stepped in to keep lines open. The Department of Telecommunications activated Intra-Circle Roaming in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat until July 24, 2026. This allows subscribers to hop onto any working network if their provider goes dark. Officials said, "Uninterrupted communication is essential during disasters to support rescue operations, facilitate relief efforts and enable timely dissemination of public safety information."
Water submerged 872 villages and 24,210 hectares of farmland. Districts hit include Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Hojai, Nagaon, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong. Sivasagar leads the misery with 3.59 lakh people impacted, while Jorhat and Charaideo hold 87,662 and 72,646 affected residents respectively.
Authorities set up 273 relief camps. More than 1.14 lakh people are sheltering there now. The Indian Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, and Assam Police are running joint rescue missions. In Jorhat, an NDRF team pulled five people from the Seleng Ghat area near Seleng Tea Estate. They saved a stranded girl, a man caught in currents, three women, and an elderly woman suffering from hypothermia.
