Shillong: The Ministry of Education has launched a search for a new Vice-Chancellor at North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong. This move comes as the institution faces persistent instability and ongoing pressure from student and faculty groups who have called for a change in leadership.

Interested candidates have until June 18 to submit their applications online. The university is seeking a distinguished academic with at least a decade of experience as a professor or equivalent expertise in research and administration. Beyond professional credentials, the successful applicant must demonstrate strong integrity and a commitment to institutional growth.

The role comes with a monthly salary of Rs 2.10 lakh, complemented by a special allowance of Rs 11,250 and additional benefits. A committee will evaluate the candidates and suggest a panel for the final selection process.

The university has faced significant turmoil since November 2024, when current Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla went on leave following widespread demonstrations. Students and staff have repeatedly demanded his removal, citing serious concerns regarding governance and administrative failures. Stakeholders are now closely monitoring this transition, hoping it will restore stability to the Shillong campus.
