Garo Hills Council Faces Criticism Over Misspelled Tourist Site Plaque

Shillong: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council is facing public backlash after a clerical error appeared on a commemorative stone at the Wari Chora tourist destination in South Garo Hills. The plaque, which marks the new Forest Walkway and Tourist Convenience facility, incorrectly lists the site as Wari Chori.

GHADC Chief Executive Member Dhormonath Sangma formally opened the project on May 23 alongside various council officials and members. Despite the project's goal of improving accessibility to the river canyon, the misspelling has triggered widespread ridicule.

The Chokpot unit of the Garo Students Union has demanded that the council fix the error immediately. Union president Jish A. Sangma criticized the oversight, stating that portraying such a popular national tourism hub with an incorrect name is unacceptable.
