Shillong: The Global Association of MSMEs (GAMSME) and Meghalaya Rural Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding to help grassroots enterprises gain access to formal financial services. This partnership targets self-help groups, local artisans, and small-scale agricultural processors who struggle to secure institutional credit.
By utilizing the bank's extensive branch network and GAMSME's outreach efforts, the initiative aims to steer rural entrepreneurs away from high-interest informal borrowing. The program focuses on financial literacy and capacity building to help micro-businesses maintain proper financial records and transition into registered enterprises.
GAMSME will implement a digital field toolkit to assess the financial readiness and compliance standards of potential borrowers. Abhijit Sharma, the founder and chairman of GAMSME, noted that the project intends to overcome long-standing barriers for local talent. "In rural India, ambition has never been in short supply. Access has. A weaver, a beekeeper, a small food processor are businesses waiting to happen, held back only by a system that could never quite see them," Sharma said.
The collaboration seeks to build a stronger economic ecosystem in Meghalaya by connecting family-run businesses with reliable banking channels. This move is expected to improve the long-term sustainability of rural micro-enterprises across the state.
