Four Arrested in Assam Arms Trafficking Probe

Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have arrested four people accused of operating an arms trafficking network in the Sivasagar district. The operation follows an investigation initiated at the local police station, with officials currently examining potential connections to broader criminal activity, including vehicle theft.

Police identified the suspects as Achinta Baruah, Amar Das, Bikram Baruah, and Papu Das. During the operation, officers recovered a handmade pistol, which preliminary findings suggest may have been smuggled into Assam from neighboring Nagaland. Three additional individuals are currently being held for questioning as the probe continues.

Additional Superintendent of Police Moidul Islam addressed the media on Friday, confirming that authorities are looking into whether the group is part of a larger organized syndicate. He stated, "The investigation has not so far yielded any specific evidence" to support allegations made by MLA Akhil Gogoi regarding a plot to assassinate him.

The four primary suspects have undergone medical evaluations at Sivasagar Civil Hospital. Officials said they expect further developments, noting that additional arrests and weapon recoveries remain possible as the investigation moves forward.
