Former Police Official Calls for Tough Action Following Sohra Construction Site Attack

Shillong: Former senior police officer M. Kharkrang has urged law enforcement to build a strong case and fight all bail applications for those accused of attacking a construction site in Sohra. The incident took place last Thursday at the Centrepoint Group project in Laitkynsew village, where about 15 individuals claiming to be members of the Khasi Students Union entered the site without authorization.

The group assaulted several workers during the encounter, leaving five people injured. One victim, Raj Kumar Sharma, required hospitalization for serious head trauma. While Kharkrang praised the police for making two initial arrests, he emphasized that private organizations must not take it upon themselves to conduct inspections that are legally reserved for government agencies.

Kharkrang, who serves as a BJP spokesperson, condemned the violence for its potential to harm the local economy. He noted that the Centrepoint Group plays a vital role in creating jobs for local youth, and warned that such aggressive behavior deters the development Meghalaya desperately needs. He expressed hope that keeping the perpetrators in custody would serve as a necessary deterrent to future acts of vigilantism.
