Imphal: Former police officer and anti-drug activist Thounaojam Brinda joined the Indian National Congress in Imphal this week. She brought 10 other leaders with her. The group includes retired bureaucrats, legal professionals, and military veterans. Congress leaders welcomed the new members during a ceremony held at the party office.

Brinda officially confirmed her run for the Yaiskul Assembly constituency. This marks her second attempt at the seat. She lost to the current Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker, Thokchom Satyabrata, in 2022. Brinda gained public attention in 2018 for leading a massive anti-drug operation. She later made headlines for returning her gallantry medal after a court acquitted the primary suspect in that case.

Former Chief Minister and MPCC president Okram Ibobi Singh managed the induction. He urged voters to support a political shift in the state. "I would remain committed to serving the people of Yaiskul and addressing key issues concerning the constituency," Brinda said. Her formal entry signals an early start to the 2027 Manipur Assembly campaign.
