Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh slammed the state government following a fresh arson attack at Kanto Sabal. Five homes went up in flames in the Imphal West district on Saturday. The violence flared during a protest march led by members of the Kuki community from nearby Kangpokpi.
Ibobi called out the security failure. The area sits near the 57 Mountain Division and maintains a heavy military presence. The former leader labeled the attack deeply unfortunate. He questioned how such unrest could persist despite the massive influx of security forces.
During a press conference at Congress Bhavan, Ibobi argued the state government is operating under the remote control of the Center. He noted that the administration only offered a statement of condemnation rather than real action. "People have been suffering for more than three years. Violence continues to erupt despite the deployment of security forces. How long will the people have to endure this situation, and why does the conflict continue?" he asked.
The Congress leader also took aim at the lack of local elections. Polls for grassroots bodies remain stalled since 2022. Autonomous District Councils have not held elections for two terms. Ibobi claimed these failures show that democratic institutions are weakening under BJP leadership. He urged voters to defend the state's integrity in upcoming elections.
