Aizawl: Rising floodwaters forced 82 families from their homes in Mizoram this week. The Khawthlangtuipui river burst its banks after days of relentless rain. In Tlabung, floodwaters swamped 42 homes. Down the road in Tipperaghat, another 40 families scrambled to safety as the river moved in.
Landslides and rockfalls are now hitting over 29 spots across the state. National Highway 54 is shut tight near Bualte village. Tourists are stuck. The southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha have no road access to the rest of the state. A major slide at Ngaizel also cut off the Aizawl to Lunglei highway.
Disaster Management Minister Lalnilawma visited the wreckage at the Ngaizel filling station on Thursday. He promised government aid for those who lost their homes. He told locals: "financial assistance and relief would be provided promptly and transparently in accordance with the prescribed rules and legal provisions." No deaths or injuries have been reported so far.
