Guwahati: Panic gripped Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Wednesday after the Ranganadi River surged. Water levels spiked when the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation opened the Panyor Hydro Electric Project dam in Arunachal Pradesh. A massive cloudburst near the power plant forced the company to dump water into the river. Flooding started at 8 am. Water first hit the Panch Noi area and nearby riverbanks.

NEEPCO released 230.83 cumecs of water by noon as the reservoir hit its limit. By 4 pm, the project was discharging water through all six gates. Officials now fear more flooding across low-lying zones already soaked from days of rain. The Dikrong and Singra rivers are also rising rapidly due to flash floods flowing down from the hills.

The district administration is on high alert. State Water Resources Minister Sushanta Buragohain is tracking the situation with department heads. The State Disaster Response Force remains on standby for any emergency. Local officials told residents: "People requiring help have been asked to contact 6003186268."

Authorities have ordered people living near riverbanks to stay away from the water. Stay alert. Follow official updates as the rivers continue to rise.
