Itanagar: Flash floods and landslides ripped through Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district after 73 mm of rain fell in a single day. The surging Possa River swallowed 18 structures and flooded a project colony. Five people remain missing as of this morning.
Roads to the area are blocked by debris. Relief teams are hiking into the disaster zone because vehicles cannot get through. Rescue efforts hit a wall today. Helicopters are grounded by thick clouds and driving rain.
Keyi Panyor Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti said, "Rescue teams have so far managed to evacuate four people, including a geologist who had been stranded between landslide-hit stretches."
The NDRF and SDRF are on the ground trying to find the missing. Authorities opened one spillway gate at the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project to keep the dam from failing. This move sent a surge of water into the river system.
Downstream, Assam is bracing for the runoff. The state issued a formal alert for the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Officials in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur are monitoring river banks around the clock. Residents in low-lying areas should stay ready to move.
