Shillong: Torrential rain turned National Highway-6 into a river on Wednesday evening. The downpour hit Jorabat, trapping drivers and cutting off the main link between Guwahati and Shillong. Traffic ground to a halt as the water rose.
A car tried to cross the flooded section near the local bridge. The current was too strong. The vehicle was swept away as water hit waist height. It was a close call for everyone on the road.
Flooding here is nothing new. It happens every monsoon. Drivers are fed up with the cycle of rising water and gridlock. Officials have yet to fix the drainage issues that turn this stretch of highway into a death trap during heavy storms.
The recurring chaos at Jorabat forces motorists to risk their lives. The road remains a major bottleneck. As one local report put it, "The flooding, a recurring monsoon problem in the area, led to major inconvenience for commuters as vehicles were forced to move slowly through submerged sections of the highway."
