Guwahati: A head-on collision on National Highway 15 claimed five lives late Friday night in the Balipara area of Assam's Sonitpur district. The crash involved a seven-seater passenger vehicle and an oncoming truck near a petrol pump. All occupants died at the scene.
Authorities identified the victims as Gobinda Hazarika, Nayan Swargiary, Papu Bora, Pranjal Bania, and Sanjay Mech. The accident occurred during the night of September 11 and 12, falling under the jurisdiction of the Rangapara Police Station.
Witnesses reported that the truck driver fled immediately after the impact. A senior police officer stated, "Police have initiated an investigation and launched efforts to locate the driver and determine the circumstances that led to the accident."
The wreck forced a brief stoppage of traffic on the busy highway. Officials arrived shortly after the collision to manage the site and eventually reopened the road to normal flow. Investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing as police look for the missing driver.
