Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrives in Shillong this Friday for a two-day tour of Meghalaya. Her visit centers on regional development, infrastructure growth, and direct engagement with the state's agricultural sector.
The Minister will kick off her itinerary by inaugurating the Northeast's largest organic spice processing plant in the Ri-Bhoi district. Operated by the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company, the facility expects to process over 10,000 metric tons of spices every year. This initiative provides support to more than 5,500 local organic farmers.
Following the plant inauguration, Sitharaman will attend a conference focused on leveraging externally aided projects across the North-Eastern states. Her schedule continues at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, where she will oversee a ceremony celebrating these development efforts. During the event, she plans to lay the foundation stones for four major projects valued at more than Rs 1,200 crore. These include significant investments in logistics, connectivity, ecotourism, and human capital development.
On Saturday, the Minister heads to Jowai to hold an interactive session with students at Kiang Nangbah Government College. She will also open the Jowai-Nartiang-Kdiap-Khanduli Road at the Wahiajer Football Stadium. Before concluding her visit, Sitharaman will tour the Shree Maa Jayantee Temple and the Nartiang Monolith Heritage Site. She will also meet with local artisans and farmers, noting her interest in the region's specific exports, as the itinerary highlights her visit to "meet black clay pottery artisans in Larnai village."
