Imphal: A 55-year-old farmer, identified as Haogin Louvum, was shot and killed on Tuesday morning while working in a paddy field in Manipur's Tamenglong district. The attack occurred near Lansan Kuki village along the Imphal-Tamenglong road when unidentified armed men opened fire on a group of cultivators.
Authorities have recovered the body and transferred it to Kangpokpi district for post-mortem procedures. Local police have registered a case and launched an investigation, though they have not yet confirmed the identity of the attackers. Tension remains high in the area, leading officials to increase security deployments along the main road.
The incident follows a period of mounting instability between Kuki and Naga communities in the region. On Monday, a Naga civilian named Chunjanglung Panmei was killed in a separate ambush in Kangpokpi district. These events occurred on the same day 14 Kuki civilians were released after being held for nearly a month by Naga civil bodies following previous fatal clashes.
Kuki community organizations have voiced sharp criticism regarding the security situation. The Kuki Inpi Manipur condemned the shooting as a "cold-blooded murder" and expressed deep concern over the protection of vulnerable villages. While some local residents suspect the involvement of an armed militant faction, police state that an official investigation is required to determine those responsible for the violence.
