Shillong: The discovery of Simanta Hajong, 21, and Prinomi Hajong, 22, inside a roadside shed in the Lumsohphoh area of Nongthymmai has left two families devastated. While police have categorized the incident as a suspected case of partial hanging, relatives remain unconvinced by this preliminary finding and are calling for a more rigorous investigation.
Simanta and Prinomi moved to Shillong from the Ranikor region to escape poverty and support their families. Simanta was his widowed mother's only son, while Prinomi was working at Alaya Café and Bar to help her father. Her co-workers last saw her leaving the establishment shortly after midnight on Saturday. Simanta regularly met her after her shifts to walk her home, as the two shared a close bond despite living in separate quarters.
Villagers who visited the site of the tragedy expressed deep skepticism regarding the circumstances of the deaths. The small size of the shed and the unusual position of the bodies, found in a sitting posture, have fueled public doubt. A villager who accompanied the grieving families stated, "The space is very small, and anyone who sees the place naturally has questions."
The families are struggling to navigate the aftermath due to language barriers and a lack of support from the victims' employers, who did not attend the post-mortem. Beyond the mystery of their deaths, the tragedy has sparked a conversation about the lack of safety measures for young workers returning home late at night. As the investigation continues, the families remain desperate for clarity regarding the events that led to the final moments of the young couple.
