Shillong: Speakers at the Rev Dr John Roberts Annual Memorial Lecture 2026 called for the protection of the Khasi language. The event took place at John Roberts Theological College in Mawklot on Thursday. They argued that language preserves collective memory and culture. Protecting it remains a priority.
Dr Amena N Passah, a former professor at North-Eastern Hill University, delivered the keynote address. She examined the life of Rev Dr John Roberts. She explained how he used Khasi to advance theological education and ministry. Her research showed how he made knowledge accessible through the local tongue. She said his work went beyond religious service, "reflecting a conscious effort to communicate with people in their own language and thereby strengthen both education and social transformation."
The discussion tracked the history of the language. It noted Welsh missionary Thomas Jones for introducing the Roman script to Khasi. It also highlighted the influence of poet Soso Tham in shaping local literature. These figures helped grow the language as a vehicle for faith and learning.
Language acts as a repository for tradition and values. The speakers warned that losing a language fractures a community and erases its history. Attendees were told to treat the promotion of Khasi as an investment in the future. The event started with a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the memory of Rev Dr Roberts.
