Shillong: A new book mapping the historical links between the Khasi-Jaintia and Karbi communities hit shelves Saturday at the Karbi Hemtun guest house in Shillong. Author Hirolfsberg Rongphar, an assistant professor at Nehru College and doctoral scholar at Assam University, Diphu Campus, penned the work to challenge modern tales of ethnic division.
The book, titled Khasi-Jaintia and Karbis: From Symbiotic History to an Ongoing False Dispute—Karbi Youth Festival as the Confluence of Two Communities, highlights the Karbi Youth Festival as a vital bridge between the groups. Rongphar argues the two have a long heritage of living side by side. It aims to shut down false narratives of conflict.
Chief guest Paiem Laborious Manik S. Syiem attended the release alongside guest of honour Jones Ingti Kathar, a retired IAS officer. Special guests included Deivica Dkhar, president of the KSU Assam University unit, and John Engti Kathar, president of the Karbi Students’ Association, Shillong. The release drew scholars and community leaders from Diphu and Shillong to discuss regional unity.
