ESIC Targets Meghalaya Expansion on 75th Anniversary

Shillong: The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) celebrated 75 years of service with a massive push to expand operations in Meghalaya. Officials confirmed in Shillong on Tuesday that a new Sub-Regional Office received approval during the 198th ESIC Corporation Meeting in New Delhi. The move aims to bring benefits closer to local workers.

Insurance Commissioner Pranay Sinha detailed the scope of the ESI Scheme. It covers cashless medical care, disability compensation, and maternity benefits. He also pointed to the Ward of Insured Person scheme, which secures seats in ESIC medical colleges for children of covered workers. "The ESI Scheme provides a comprehensive framework," Sinha stated.

Deputy Director Ahtesham reported that the scheme currently covers 16,000 people in the state. ESIC officials plan to push that number to 40,000. They aim to register 20,000 new workers by working alongside the state government. Garod LSN Dykes, Secretary of the Labour, Employment and Skill Development department, attended the event alongside 200 other beneficiaries.

The corporation is growing its physical footprint. It recently set up four Dispensary-cum-Branch Offices in Nongstoin, Khliehriat, Tura, and Jowai. These join existing facilities in Shillong and Byrnihat. Financial data shows the corporation paid out over Rs 1.29 crore in cash benefits during the 2024-25 period. At the event, organizers handed out Rs 3.37 lakh in maternity assistance to three women. The day wrapped with a health camp and a session to address worker grievances.
