Shillong: East Khasi Hills district officials slapped a deadline on roadside business owners. They have 15 days to clear out. The order targets all dhabas and eateries operating illegally along the National Highway from the 3rd Mile to the 7th Mile in Upper Shillong.

The move follows strict Supreme Court rules on road safety. The district Deputy Commissioner issued the directive to clear the Right of Way immediately. Officials claim new construction in these zones is strictly banned.

The official order states: "In Compliance to the Order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Suo Moto Writ Petition (Civil) No. 9 of 2025 regarding National Highway Safety, wherein, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has prohibited the Construction and operation of any new Dhaba, eatery or commercial structure within the Right of Way (ROW) of the National Highway."

Business owners must tear down these structures themselves. Do not wait for the heavy machinery. If the sites remain after two weeks, the Public Works Department and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited will force the removal. Authorities want voluntary cooperation to dodge coercive action.
