Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials are launching door-to-door inspections to hunt down unverified tenants. The crackdown targets the densely populated Mawprem and Jhalupara localities. These areas fall under Shillong Cantonment jurisdiction. Federal land status previously made enforcement difficult. Now, the district administration plans to tighten the net on influx.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal led a meeting last Thursday to set the plan in motion. The strategy relies on a new Standard Operating Procedure. This document coordinates efforts between the district administration, local police, and the Cantonment Board. All three agencies will run joint verifications to track every resident.
Periodic inspections will follow the initial sweep. These checks ensure everyone follows the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. This law stands as the primary mechanism for monitoring residents across the state. Officials hope this protocol will effectively "monitor resident status and verify identities within the Cantonment’s jurisdiction."
Key leadership attended the session to confirm the path forward. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem joined Additional Deputy Commissioners Eva Warjri and Mabel Kynta. Cantonment Board CEO Souvik also participated in the briefing. Representatives from the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong arrived to back the effort. These traditional bodies will help keep the peace in sensitive zones.
