Kohima: The East Dimapur Town Council is conducting an extensive drainage clearance project at Sugarmill Nalluh to address chronic flooding near the airport. The operation is now in its second day and focuses on removing heavy silt and debris that have obstructed water flow in the area.
To expedite the cleanup, the council deployed four JCB excavators and one poclain machine. Workers are removing waste from the drains and leaving the material to dry before it is hauled away for final disposal. Officials noted that the flooding is primarily caused by overflowing drains and the frequent dumping of garbage into the waterway.
The effort highlights a broader waste management struggle in the region. According to council chairman Nuito Awomi, the closure of the Sunrise Colony dumping site has left residents without a proper place to discard trash, leading to increased roadside dumping. The council is currently working with the state government to address the lack of disposal facilities. Cleanup activities are expected to continue throughout the week.
