Drivers Demand Daily Security Escorts on Manipur Highway

Imphal: Passenger vehicles heading to Tamenglong, Nungba, Noney, and Jiribam ground to a halt Wednesday morning. No security escort arrived at New Keithelmanbi. Drivers left dozens of commuters stranded on the side of the road. People traveling for medical care or work face indefinite delays.

Drivers currently rely on the schedules of commercial truck convoys to get through the area. They call this system unreliable and dangerous. The highway serves as a vital link between the Manipur valley, western districts, and Assam. With ethnic conflict gripping the region, local transport operators want an end to the uncertainty.

The transport workers asked the State Government and security agencies to set up a dedicated escort for small vehicles. They believe a consistent daily schedule stops the repeated transit backups. One driver noted the severity of the issue, stating that the current system is "leaving commuters stranded and vulnerable amid the continuing ethnic conflict." A set, regular escort system remains the only way to keep the road moving safely.
