Shillong: A doctor resigned and bolted from Thane after being beaten by a Shiv Sena leader. Ramesh Mhatre, a corporator from the Eknath Shinde faction, stormed the Shastri Nagar Hospital on July 6. The violence erupted after staff told a family they needed to move a newborn because the neonatal unit was full. The doctors insisted on the transfer to ensure the baby got proper care.
Instead of listening, the family called Mhatre. He arrived with a mob of supporters. CCTV footage shows the group cornering medical staff. Mhatre slapped a woman doctor's phone out of her hand before turning on the others. He rained blows on the staff, leaving one doctor injured.
The victim, now in hiding, said he cannot go back. "I have resigned because there is a lot of fear. Goons are watching us, and I have already left the city. They are very dangerous people. The other doctors may continue working there, but I cannot. I will not go back there again," the doctor told NDTV.
Mhatre refused to apologize for the attack. He claimed his actions were justified and even suggested the doctors should say sorry to him first. Police arrested Mhatre and five of his associates. The corporator checked into a local civil hospital shortly after his arrest, citing unspecified health issues.
