Kohima: The Dimapur District Auto Drivers' Union (DDADU) is purging the ranks of rogue operators. Union president Tito Yepthomi declared war on proxy display cards, reckless driving, and illegal fare hikes. The union held talks with local police to enforce stricter oversight on vehicle credentials. Some drivers share one card among three or four people. This trick ends now.
Yepthomi warned that offenders face stiff fines. He wants owners to paste display cards clearly on all vehicles. Reckless maneuvers and line-breaking remain common complaints against auto operators. The union will join police at strategic spots to monitor traffic discipline. Drivers caught breaking rules will lose union support immediately.
Overloading is a major safety concern. Petrol auto-rickshaws must limit capacity to three passengers. Diesel models face similar restrictions to prevent accidents. Yepthomi urged the Deputy Commissioner and District Transport Officer to limit new vehicle permits to ease congestion. He noted that the union must call for “assurance certificate” to be limited and properly verified to help minimise traffic congestion.
Uniforms and cards are now mandatory for every driver, local or non-local. Yepthomi apologized to the public for drivers who demand rates above union-fixed levels. Passengers should report overcharging via the number listed at authorized parking bays. The DDADU office remains open for these grievances.
Intoxication behind the wheel draws zero tolerance. The union will seize vehicles operated by drivers under the influence and surrender them to police. Regarding a recent fire that destroyed autos and left many drivers homeless, Yepthomi promised to lobby the DC and DTO for relief. The union plans to assist victims with lost paperwork and Inner Line Permit issues.
