Shillong: Gerald Shullai quit Congress on Saturday. He brought his Shillong West supporters with him to the National People’s Party. The defection signals a shift in the local political power balance.
The induction ceremony took place at Lama Villa. Senior party figures greeted the new arrivals. Grace Kharpuri, HM Shangpliang, and Emlang Lytan welcomed Shullai into the fold. They expect his presence to build muscle for the NPP across urban districts.
The party aims to secure its hold on the region. Officials want to consolidate their base before the Shillong parliamentary by-election. Party leaders expressed confidence that Shullai’s entry would "strengthen the NPP’s presence in Shillong West and other urban areas."
