Guwahati: A college student died and another suffered critical injuries after a large, decayed tree collapsed onto their scooter in Guwahati on Friday morning. The incident occurred in the Bhootnath-Kalipur area as the pair traveled from the Bharalumukh side to attend an examination at Pandu College.
Witnesses reported that the tree, which stood near a railway track, suddenly toppled and crushed the two-wheeler. Parismita Hazarika, who was riding pillion, became trapped beneath the debris, while the driver, Jyotirmoy Mohan, sustained injuries. Local residents, railway personnel, and Guwahati Municipal Corporation officials worked together to rescue the victims.
Both students were transported to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared Hazarika dead upon arrival, citing severe injuries including a fracture near the upper spinal region and trauma around the waist. Hospital authorities confirmed that Mohan remains under medical care. Regarding the incident, police have initiated legal proceedings and launched an investigation. One witness noted the tree was a "large, decayed tree standing near a railway track" that suddenly toppled onto the road.
