Kohima: The Central Nagaland Tribal Council (CNTC) has demanded that Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio immediately halt all oil drilling in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB). The council issued the call on July 18, targeting both state operations and drilling by the Assam counterpart. They insist that work remain frozen until officials officially demarcate the boundary and consult with all affected parties.
CNTC President Hukiye Yepthomi and General Secretary Akum Pongen stated that the council supports the push for petroleum exploration to drive economic growth and job creation. However, the group warned against proceeding without proper protocols. They argued that current uncertainty creates apprehension among landowners and local villages regarding the scope of the projects.
The organization submitted a five-point list of demands to the government. They called for a comprehensive meeting involving tribal hohos, civil society groups, village councils, and experts. This forum must address customary land rights, benefit-sharing, and legal frameworks. The council noted, "A participatory and transparent consultative process will promote public confidence, minimize future conflicts, and ensure that development proceeds with the informed consent and cooperation of all concerned."
Economic development remains a priority for the council. They urged the state to build at least one oil refinery within Nagaland. Without downstream infrastructure, they fear the state will lose significant long-term industrial benefits. They want this refinery included as a core part of the petroleum policy.
Finally, the CNTC emphasized environmental protection. They want strict adherence to environmental laws to safeguard forests, water sources, and agricultural land. They demand continuous monitoring and restoration plans to prevent long-term damage. The council maintains that ignoring these requirements will likely trigger public unrest and legal trouble.
