Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma shut down talk of a mass defection from the United Democratic Party to the National People’s Party this Tuesday. Rumors swirled that lawmakers were ready to jump ship. Sangma told reporters to back off.
He brushed off the speculation as simple political chatter. Legislative leaders talk all the time. It is business as usual for the state, he argued. "Leaders from different parties regularly stay in touch, discuss political developments, future prospects, and issues concerning the state," Sangma said.
The ruling NPP is tightening its grip on power as the UDP faces internal pressure. Despite the shifting climate, the Chief Minister refused to confirm if any specific legislators were plotting a move. He warned that guessing games only stir up unnecessary noise. Most political talk leads nowhere. Sangma insisted that officials should stop jumping to conclusions before anything actually happens.
