Itanagar: Leading Christian organizations in Arunachal Pradesh have called on Chief Minister Pema Khandu to stop the process of framing new rules under the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act of 1978. The Arunachal Christian Forum and the Confederation of Churches of Arunachal Pradesh submitted a formal memorandum expressing deep opposition to the government initiative.
These religious bodies argue that implementing new rules threatens constitutional rights, religious liberty, and the social harmony of the state. They claim the government has bypassed public consultation, causing widespread anxiety among various community groups. Despite previous efforts to engage with officials, the groups report that the state is continuing its work through a high-powered committee.
The Arunachal Christian Forum has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government, demanding an immediate suspension of the rule-framing process. They insist that no notifications or enforcement actions should occur during this timeframe. The groups are calling for the government to cancel the current process and open a broad dialogue regarding the potential repeal of the 1978 legislation.
Should their demands remain unmet, the organizations have threatened to launch democratic protests. Potential actions include mass rallies throughout the state and a possible statewide bandh to force the administration to halt the implementation of the rules.
